About Isola del Garda
The largest island on Lake Garda, crowned by a spectacular neo-Gothic Venetian villa and gardens, accessible only by private boat tours from the lakeside villages, a hidden gem of extraordinary beauty.
Isola del Garda is the largest island on Lake Garda, lying close to the western shore near San Felice del Benaco in the province of Brescia. The island has a long history as a place of religious retreat, Saint Francis of Assisi is said to have visited, and housed a Franciscan convent until the Napoleonic suppression. Today it is dominated by the magnificent Villa Borghese Cavazza, a neo-Gothic Venetian fantasy built between 1880 and 1903 by the Borghese family, with towers, loggias, and terraced gardens sloping down to the lake in the English and Italian styles. The privately owned island is open to visitors by guided boat tours from several Lake Garda ports between April and October. The combination of the romantic neo-Gothic architecture, the formal gardens with their statuary and parterres, and the shimmering lake setting makes it one of the most beautiful privately owned properties in Italy.
Did you know? Saint Francis of Assisi is said to have stayed on Isola del Garda in the 13th century, drawn by its isolation from the mainland, making it one of the most storied islands in northern Italy.
