About Valpolicella Wine Country
The spectacular wine country 20km northwest of Verona, producing Amarone della Valpolicella, Italy's most powerful red wine, and Recioto, with historic cellars and vineyard-covered valleys open to visitors.
The Valpolicella wine zone is one of Italy's most celebrated wine-producing areas, occupying the valleys running north of Verona into the foothills of the Lessini Mountains. The principal grape varieties are Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara, used to produce three distinct styles: the light, fresh Valpolicella Classico; the rich, full-bodied Ripasso; and the magnificent Amarone della Valpolicella, produced from partially dried grapes (appassimento) and aged for years, resulting in one of Italy's most complex and powerful red wines with alcohol levels typically reaching 15-17%. The fortified sweet wine Recioto della Valpolicella, made from the same appassimento process, is another jewel. The zone's most historic cellars, Masi, Allegrini, Zenato, Dal Forno Romano, and Quintarelli, offer tastings and tours. The medieval village of Sant'Ambrogio di Valpolicella contains a remarkable early Christian basilica.
Did you know? Amarone della Valpolicella is made from grapes that are dried for 3-4 months before fermentation, losing up to 40% of their weight and creating one of the world's most concentrated wines at 15-17% alcohol.
