About Soave

A beautifully preserved medieval walled village 30km east of Verona, famous for Soave DOC white wine made from Garganega grapes, dominated by a spectacular Scaliger castle.

Soave is one of the most attractive and well-preserved medieval walled towns in the Veneto, located about 30km east of Verona in the foothills east of the Adige valley. The town is enclosed within remarkably complete medieval walls with towers, and above it rises the magnificent Castello di Soave, a Scaliger fortress of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries offering superb views over the wine-covered plains. Soave gives its name to one of Italy's best-known white wines, Soave DOC, made primarily from Garganega grapes with some Trebbiano di Soave, producing fresh, delicately flavoured white wines that range from the simple and everyday to the complex and age-worthy single-vineyard Soave Classico. Numerous cantinas in the town and surrounding hills offer tastings. The historic centre is charming and largely un-touristy despite the wine fame.

Did you know? Soave wine was once one of Italy's most exported wines globally, though overproduction in the 1970s-80s damaged its reputation, a quality renaissance has restored its standing as one of Italy's finest whites.
