About Borghetto sul Mincio

One of Italy's most beautiful villages, with medieval water mills and stone bridges spanning the Mincio river, famous for its handmade tortellini di Valeggio, a pilgrimage for food lovers.

Borghetto sul Mincio, a fraction of the commune of Valeggio sul Mincio about 30km southwest of Verona, is consistently listed among the most beautiful villages in Italy (I Borghi più belli d'Italia). The village clusters around a medieval Visconti dam and bridge (built 1393) which spans the Mincio river with a spectacular fortified bridge-dam, creating a picturesque setting of rushing water, ancient stone mills, romantic restaurants in mill buildings, and a backdrop of medieval fortifications. The Mincio river creates natural pools and rapids around the millstones, animated with ducks and herons. Borghetto is famous throughout Italy for its handmade tortellini di Valeggio, tiny hand-folded pasta stuffed with meat, sold by the ladies of the village at roadside tables and in the restaurants. A pasta festival (Festa del Nodo d'Amore) is held on the third Tuesday of June each year, when thousands of visitors join for an outdoor communal dinner beside the river.

Did you know? The Festa del Nodo d'Amore (Festival of the Love Knot) has been held every third Tuesday of June since 1978, thousands dine together al fresco beside the Mincio in what is one of Italy's most charming village festivals.
