About Porta Leona

A partially surviving Roman gateway from the 1st century BC with an excavated Roman street level visible at its base, standing at the south end of the Via Cappello near Juliet's house.

Porta Leona is the older of Verona's two surviving Roman gateways, dating from the first century BC when Verona was still a Latin colony. Only the interior facade (the side facing into the city) survives in any completeness, with two arched passageways flanked by half-columns of the Corinthian order. The name refers to a stone lion, now lost, that once decorated the gate. Particularly fascinating is the excavated area at the base of the gate, which reveals the original Roman street level some two metres below the current modern road surface, giving a vivid sense of how much the city has been built up over the millennia. The gate stands at the junction of Via Cappello and Corso Porta Borsari, creating an atmospheric Roman frame for the approach to the medieval streets leading toward Juliet's house.

Did you know? The excavated area at Porta Leona's base reveals the original Roman street level, approximately 2 metres below the current road, showing vividly how 20 centuries of urban life have raised the city floor.
