About Porta Borsari

The best-preserved Roman gateway in Verona, dating from the 3rd century AD, where the ancient Via Postumia road entered the city, an impressive two-storey marble facade still standing on a busy street.

Porta Borsari is the finest surviving Roman gateway in Verona, a two-storey marble structure dating from around 265 AD, though the gateway itself may stand on an earlier Republican-era foundation. The name comes from the medieval tax collectors (bursarii) who once operated here. The facade features two arched passageways flanked by elegant Corinthian half-columns on both storeys, with decorative pediments and friezes, a triumphal arch-like design that announced the grandeur of the city to arriving travellers. The Via Postumia, one of the most important Roman roads of northern Italy, passed through this gate. Corso Porta Borsari, the modern street through the arch, follows exactly the ancient Roman road alignment. Standing before this gate, you are standing on the exact spot where Roman legions, merchants, and emperors once entered the city.

Did you know? The Via Postumia, one of the most important consular roads of Roman northern Italy, passed through Porta Borsari; the modern street through the arch still follows the exact Roman road alignment.
