About Litochoro, Gateway to Olympus

Litochoro, a small town at the eastern foot of Mount Olympus, where most climbs begin, with stone lanes, a square under plane trees and the mouth of the Enipeas gorge above the houses.

With about 6,700 people, Litochoro lies at about 300 metres between the mountain and the sea. It was the home of Christos Kakkalos, who guided the first recorded ascent of Mytikas in 1913, and a road leads up to Prionia, the main trailhead. The town has a national park information centre and a small nautical museum.

The town is open all year. Ancient Dion lies about eight kilometres north, and the beaches of the coast are busy mostly in summer. Ask in the town about the state of the mountain paths.
