About Dion, the Sacred City of Zeus
Dion at the foot of Mount Olympus, the sacred city of the ancient Macedonians, with sanctuaries of Zeus and other gods, theatres, Roman baths and paved streets among springs and trees.
The city grew around a great sanctuary of Olympian Zeus and the Muses, where the Macedonian kings held sacrifices and festivals. Its wall was built around 300 BC, and under Rome it became a colony. The park holds a Hellenistic and a Roman theatre, the sanctuaries of Zeus, Demeter, Asklepios and Isis, baths, streets and early Christian basilicas.
From November to March the park is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and closes in the afternoon. The paths are flat but can be wet near the springs. The museum is about half a kilometre away in the village.
