About Museo de Bellas Artes
The second finest art museum in Spain after the Prado, housed in a magnificent former 17th-century convent, with an unparalleled collection of Sevillian Baroque masters including Murillo and Zurbarán.
The Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla is the most important art museum in Andalusia and the second most important in Spain after the Prado. It occupies the former Convento de la Merced Calzada, a magnificent 17th-century baroque convent building arranged around a series of beautiful cloistered patios. The museum's permanent collection focuses particularly on the Golden Age of Sevillian painting, the 17th century, when Seville was the most important city in Spain and home to some of the greatest painters in European history. The collection is particularly strong in the work of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617-1682), whose soft, luminous religious paintings are represented here by dozens of masterpieces, and Francisco de Zurbarán (1598-1664), whose intensely still religious canvases are among the most powerful paintings in Spanish art history. The building itself, with its painted ceilings and golden altarpiece in the former convent church, is as remarkable as the collection.
Did you know? Murillo, whose work fills several rooms of this museum, was born in Seville in 1617 and trained here; he is considered the most technically accomplished painter of the Spanish Baroque and one of the most popular artists in Europe during the 18th century.
