The Guadalquivir, from the Arabic Al-Wadi al-Kabir, the Great River, is the river that made Seville possible. Without the Guadalquivir, Seville would be just another inland Andalusian town; with it, Seville became for two centuries the most important port in the world, the gateway through which the wealth of the Americas flowed into Europe. The river is navigable from the sea to Seville, a distance of some 80 kilometres, which made the city's harbour accessible to ocean-going vessels. Today the Paseo de Colón and Paseo de las Delicias form the main riverside promenades on the east bank, offering some of the finest views in the city: the Torre del Oro reflected in the water, the white houses of Triana on the opposite bank, the bridges of Isabel II and San Telmo, and the great plain of the Guadalquivir valley stretching to the south.
