About Palacio de San Telmo

A magnificent 1682 Baroque palace with an extraordinary Churrigueresque portal, once a naval school, then a ducal residence, now the seat of the Junta de Andalucía regional government.

The Palacio de San Telmo is one of the most imposing Baroque buildings in Seville and one of the most important civil monuments in Andalusia. Built between 1682 and 1796 as a naval school to train pilots for the transatlantic routes between Seville and the Americas, it was later used as a seminary and then, from 1849, became the private residence of the Dukes of Montpensier, who transformed its grounds into the Parque de María Luisa (donated to the city by the Duchess in 1893). The building's most remarkable feature is its 1754 main portal, designed by Figueroa in the Churrigueresque style, the most exuberantly ornate form of Spanish Baroque, with figures of navigators and allegorical scenes piled up in tiers of dizzying complexity. Since 1992, the palace has served as the official seat of the government of the Autonomous Community of Andalusia.

Did you know? The Palacio de San Telmo was originally built as a school for navigators training on the transatlantic routes, the pilots trained here were responsible for safely guiding the treasure fleets of the Spanish Empire across the Atlantic Ocean.
