About Calle Sierpes

Seville's famous pedestrian shopping street, a lively curve of traditional pastry shops, hat makers, fashion stores, and cafés that has been the social hub of city life for over five centuries.

Calle Sierpes, Snake Street, is the oldest and most prestigious shopping street in Seville, a gently curving pedestrian lane that has been the commercial heart of the city since the medieval period. The street runs from the Plaza del Salvador through the retail district to Plaza Nueva, and its name is thought to derive from a "sierpe" (serpent) emblem that once marked a tavern on the street. The street is famous for its traditional establishments: old-fashioned confiterías (pastry shops) selling mantecados and polvorones, traditional hat shops selling the wide-brimmed sombreros used in the April Fair, and fashion boutiques displaying the trajes de gitana for Feria season. Several historic cafés line the street. It is also the route of many Semana Santa processions, and the street's balconies are among the most sought-after viewing spots during Holy Week.

Did you know? Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote, was briefly imprisoned in a debtor's jail on Calle Sierpes in 1597, a local tradition holds that he conceived the idea for his masterpiece during this confinement.
