About Feria de Abril
Spain's greatest fiesta, a week-long festival of flamenco dresses, sherry, Sevillana dancing, and private tent parties held two weeks after Easter in the illuminated Real de la Feria fairground.
The Feria de Abril is one of the most spectacular popular festivals in the world, held in Seville two weeks after Easter in a dedicated fairground called the Real de la Feria in the Los Remedios district. The fair began in 1847 as a livestock market and has evolved into a week-long celebration of Andalusian culture. The centerpiece is the caseta, a private decorated tent owned by families, groups of friends, or cultural associations. Guests dress in traditional flamenco costume (women in brilliantly coloured traje de gitana dresses, men in traditional riding attire) and spend the nights dancing the Sevillana, drinking fino and manzanilla sherry, and eating traditional Sevillian food. The fairground is illuminated by tens of thousands of coloured lightbulbs. The most spectacular moment is the alumbrado, the lighting up, on Monday night at midnight, when the entire fairground blazes into life.
Did you know? The Feria de Abril began in 1847 as a simple livestock fair; within a generation it had transformed into a week-long social celebration so important that it effectively defines the annual rhythm of Sevillian life.
