About Semana Santa (Holy Week)

The world's most spectacular Holy Week procession, where 60 brotherhoods carry magnificent floats bearing religious sculptures through Seville's streets over 12 days, drawing one million visitors each year.

Seville's Semana Santa (Holy Week) is considered the most emotionally intense and visually spectacular religious festival in the world. During the week before Easter, 60 brotherhoods (cofradías) take their sacred floats (pasos) out of their home churches and process slowly through the streets of Seville to the Cathedral and back. Each brotherhood has its own history, its own distinctive regalia, its own procession route, and its own body of devotional music. The pasos themselves, monumental wooden floats bearing golden carved religious scenes and the brotherhood's patron statues, are carried by teams of costaleros who work invisible beneath the float structure, carrying its enormous weight on their necks and shoulders. The most celebrated image in all of Seville's Holy Week is the Virgen de la Macarena, whose golden-tear-streaked face is among the most beloved religious images in Spain.

Did you know? The costaleros, the men who carry the floats, work entirely invisible under the paso structure, carrying the enormous weight on the back of their necks in a bent-over position; a single paso may weigh over 5,000 kilograms.
