About El Rinconcillo

Founded in 1670, Spain's oldest tavern, a beautifully preserved tile-covered bar where the old Seville tradition of free tapas with every drink survives alongside the city's finest spinach with chickpeas and salmorejo.

El Rinconcillo claims the distinction of being the oldest tavern in Spain, founded in 1670 in the labyrinthine streets of the Barrio Alfalfa near the Iglesia del Salvador. The interior is magnificently preserved: dark wooden counters, walls entirely covered in hand-painted azulejo tiles, barrels of fino sherry stacked behind the bar, and a chalk-scored tablet on the ancient counter where the barmen still keep track of customers' bills by marks on the wood, the tab is paid when you leave. The bar is famous for two dishes in particular: espinacas con garbanzos (spinach with chickpeas), a Moorish-derived recipe that has been a Sevillian favourite for centuries, and salmorejo, the thick cold tomato and bread soup of Seville, better than you will find almost anywhere else in the city.

Did you know? El Rinconcillo was founded in 1670, making it older than the United States, older than the Bank of England, and older than the reign of Louis XIV's most celebrated decades. It is the oldest continuously operating tavern in Spain.
