The Sacred Heart Cathedral, the Catholic cathedral of Sarajevo, is the largest cathedral in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the seat of the Archbishop of Vrhbosna. A twin-towered neo-Gothic church with Romanesque touches, built between 1884 and 1889 to the design of Josip Vancaš, it went up in the first years of Austro-Hungarian rule, when the city was being remade in a European style. Its twin towers and rose window are so emblematic that they appear on the flag and coat of arms of Sarajevo.
Inside are a marble high altar, frescoes and stained glass, and the tomb of the first archbishop, who began the building. Damaged but not destroyed in the siege, the cathedral has been repaired; in front of it stand a statue of Pope John Paul II, who came to Sarajevo in 1997 to call for peace, and a Sarajevo Rose.
