About Ferhadija and the Meeting of Cultures
The main pedestrian street of Sarajevo, where a line in the pavement marked 'Meeting of Cultures' shows the Ottoman old town giving way to the Austro-Hungarian city, a few steps that cross from East to West.
Ferhadija is the main pedestrian street of Sarajevo, running from the Ottoman bazaar westward to the Eternal Flame, a memorial to the dead of the Second World War. Along its way, set into the paving near the old covered market, is a line marked 'Sarajevo, Meeting of Cultures'. It marks, symbolically, where the Ottoman old town gives way to the architecture that arrived with Austria-Hungary after 1878: step across it, and you cross in a few paces from East to West.
The street is lined with cafes, shops and small grills, a social artery of the city. It also carries the memory of the siege: set into its pavement is a 'Sarajevo Rose', a shell scar filled with red resin, one of around two hundred such memorials across the city, marking where people were killed.
