Trebević is the mountain that rises directly above Sarajevo, about 1,630 metres high, long the city's favourite playground for picnics and hikes. Its cable car first opened in 1959, was destroyed in the war of the 1990s, and was rebuilt and reopened in 2018; in a few minutes it carries you from the edge of the old town up to sweeping views over the valley.
On the mountain's slopes winds the concrete bobsleigh and luge track of the 1984 Winter Olympics, which Sarajevo hosted, the first in a communist country. During the siege the track became a front line and an artillery position; today it is a haunting, graffiti-covered ruin, a popular walk down through the pines, with the old banked curves and the gun positions still visible.
