About Svrzo's House
A beautifully preserved Ottoman-era town house, now a museum, showing how a wealthy Sarajevo family lived behind high walls, with separate men's and women's quarters, carved woodwork, cobbled courtyards and a fountain.
Svrzo's House, Svrzina kuća, is a superbly preserved Ottoman-era town house, now a branch of the Museum of Sarajevo, a few minutes north of the old town. Dating from the Ottoman period, with parts going back to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and built of timber and mud brick on a stone base, it is regarded as the model of a Bosnian town house and is a national monument.
Its rooms show how a wealthy Sarajevo family once lived, divided between the public quarters, the selamluk, and the private family quarters, the haremluk, with separate spaces for men, women and servants. High walls enclose a cobbled courtyard with a fountain for washing before prayer, and the rooms are furnished with low divans, carved woodwork and lattice windows.
