About Yellow Fortress (Žuta Tabija)
A ruined 18th-century cannon bastion on the old Vratnik walls above the old town, now a grassy terrace, the city's favourite sunset spot, where a cannon is still fired to break the fast in Ramadan.
The Yellow Fortress, Žuta Tabija, is an eighteenth-century cannon bastion of the old Vratnik walls, on a hill above the old town. The walls were ordered in 1727, after Prince Eugene of Savoy's raid had burned an undefended Sarajevo, and built with the help of architects from Dubrovnik. Today the fortress is a grassy, tree-shaded terrace with benches and wide views over the valley, the minarets and the red roofs.
It is the city's best-loved sunset spot, where locals and visitors gather at dusk. During Ramadan a cannon is fired from here at sunset to mark iftar, the breaking of the fast, and crowds gather on the terrace to watch and to share the meal. The old walled quarter of Vratnik around it is a protected national monument, and the White Fortress stands a short walk away.
