About Latin Bridge
A modest Ottoman stone bridge over the Miljacka that changed the world: beside it, in June 1914, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated, the spark that set off the First World War.
The Latin Bridge is an Ottoman-era stone bridge over the Miljacka river, with four arches and small round openings over its piers that appear in the seal of Sarajevo; a stone bridge has stood here since the sixteenth century. Named for the old Catholic 'Latin' quarter it once linked to the far bank, it is among the oldest surviving bridges in the city, and was known in Yugoslav times as Princip's Bridge.
On 28 June 1914, beside this bridge, Gavrilo Princip, a young member of the Young Bosnia movement, shot and killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife Sophie. The assassination set off the chain of events that led within weeks to the First World War. The corner building, once a delicatessen, now houses the Museum of Sarajevo 1878-1918, which tells the story.
