About Sarajevo City Hall (Vijećnica)
The grandest building of Austro-Hungarian Sarajevo, a striped pseudo-Moorish palace of 1896, later the national library, shelled and burned in the 1992 siege, losing around a million and a half books, and reborn in 2014.
The Vijećnica, Sarajevo's City Hall, is the grandest legacy of Austro-Hungarian rule, a striped red-and-cream palace in a pseudo-Moorish style, built between 1892 and 1896 beside the Miljacka. Its central atrium rises to a hexagonal stained-glass skylight ringed by arcaded galleries. From here, on 28 June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand left a reception shortly before he was assassinated.
From 1949 it served as the National and University Library. On the night of 25-26 August 1992, during the siege, it was shelled and the library burned, with the loss of around a million and a half books and many irreplaceable manuscripts; citizens and librarians tried to save what they could under fire. After years of restoration the building was reopened in 2014.
