About Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque
The grandest Ottoman mosque in Bosnia, built around 1531 for the governor Gazi Husrev-beg, the centrepiece of a great endowment that also gave the old town its madrasa, covered market, clock tower and baths.
The Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque is the largest historical mosque in Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of the finest Ottoman buildings in the Balkans. It was completed around 1531 for Gazi Husrev-beg, the Ottoman governor of Bosnia, as the centrepiece of his endowment, a vakuf that also built a madrasa, a covered market, a clock tower and a bathhouse, and shaped much of the old town. The governor is buried in the mausoleum beside it.
It is a classic early-Ottoman domed mosque, with a central dome, a columned porch and a single slender minaret. Beside it rises the Sarajevo Clock Tower, whose clock keeps lunar time, set by hand so that twelve o'clock falls at sunset. Heavily damaged during the siege of the 1990s, the mosque was repaired, and its library holds tens of thousands of historic manuscripts.
