About Skaros Rock
A bare crag jutting into the caldera below Imerovigli, Skaros was Santorini's fortified medieval capital for five centuries, never captured by Turks or pirates, now reached only on foot.
Skaros Rock is a steep promontory that juts from the caldera cliff just below the village of Imerovigli, and it counts among Santorini's most recognisable landmarks. It held one of the island's five medieval kastelia, or fortified settlements, and served as the capital of Santorini for centuries under Venetian and later rule. The fortress on its summit, Epano Kastro, was built in the early thirteenth century and is associated by tradition with the Venetian Barozzi family, after Duke Marco Sanudo granted the island around 1207.
A Catholic settlement of roughly two hundred houses grew on and below the rock, protected from Ottoman and Barbary pirate raids during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Repeated earthquakes and volcanic activity from 1650 onward gradually drove residents to Fira and Imerovigli, leaving Skaros abandoned by the early nineteenth century. The medieval chapel of Panagia Theoskepasti still stands at its base, and the rock is now reached only on foot.
Did you know? Through the entire Venetian period, Skaros held out: sources say the castle was never captured by Ottoman forces or by pirates. A great bell at the summit warned townsfolk whenever hostile sails appeared.
