About Fira

Santorini's cliff-top capital, strung along the caldera rim: crowded, cathedral-topped, and linked to its old port by a cable car that still shares the road with mule steps.

Fira is the modern capital and administrative centre of Santorini, built along the western edge of the caldera rim high above the sea. The 2021 census recorded 1,516 inhabitants. Its whitewashed houses line the cliff top, interrupted by two cathedrals: the Greek Orthodox Candlemas cathedral, known as the Three Bells of Fira, and a Roman Catholic cathedral that reflects the Catholic community left by Venetian and Frankish rule of the island.

A cable car built by the Austrian firm Doppelmayr and donated by the family foundation of shipowner Evangelos Nomikos opened in 1982, linking the town with the old port at Gialos. It supplements the historic zigzag path of roughly 580 to 600 steps, still climbed on foot or by mule. Fira also holds two museums: the Museum of Prehistoric Thera, displaying finds from Akrotiri, and the Archaeological Museum of Thera.

Did you know? The cable car that opened in 1982 was a gift: shipowner Evangelos Nomikos's family foundation funded and donated it to the island, and ticket revenue is still shared among Santorini's villages today.
