About Santorini Caldera
The drowned volcanic crater at Santorini's heart: a sea-flooded basin about 12 by 7 kilometres, ringed by cliffs, with two young, still-active burnt islands at its centre.
The Santorini caldera is a large, mostly sea-flooded volcanic caldera in the southern Aegean, measuring roughly 12 by 7 kilometres and rimmed on three sides by steep cliffs up to about 300 metres high, with a maximum water depth near 385 metres. It is the product of several major explosive eruptions and collapses over hundreds of thousands of years, rather than a single event. Its most recent great collapse accompanied the Late Bronze Age 'Minoan' eruption, a VEI 7 event comparable in scale to the 1815 eruption of Tambora.
That eruption buried the Bronze Age town of Akrotiri under thick pumice and ash and generated tsunamis that struck Minoan Crete. Two younger islands, Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni, have since grown from the caldera floor, the most recent eruptions occurring in the 20th century. The volcano remains active and is designated one of the world's sixteen Decade Volcanoes.
Did you know? No one can pin down the Minoan eruption's date. Radiocarbon favours the late 17th century BC, while archaeological and Egyptian evidence points to the mid-16th; the credible range runs roughly 1620 to 1500 BC.
