About Perissa Black Beach

A long black-sand beach on Santorini's southeast coast, where pulverised volcanic rock meets the sea beneath the sheer grey mountain of Mesa Vouno and the archaeological site above.

Perissa is a long black-sand beach on the southeast coast of Santorini, about 13 kilometres from Fira, at the foot of the steep Mesa Vouno headland. Its sand and pebbles are dark because they are pulverised lava, ash and volcanic rock from the island's eruptions. Perissa runs continuously into Perivolos and Agios Georgios, together forming one of Santorini's longest continuous beaches, a stretch often cited at more than three kilometres. The white church of Timios Stavros is a landmark on the beachfront.

Mesa Vouno rises directly behind the beach and separates Perissa from Kamari on the far side; a small seasonal sea-taxi links the two in about ten minutes. The archaeological site of Ancient Thera stands on top of the mountain, reached by a steep footpath from the Perissa end in roughly 45 minutes. In midsummer the dark sand grows hot enough to make footwear advisable.

Did you know? The black volcanic sand absorbs heat so efficiently that on a July or August afternoon it can burn bare feet, which is why regulars cross it in flip-flops or water shoes.
