About Akrotiri (Prehistoric Town)
A Bronze Age Cycladic town sealed under volcanic ash around 1600 BCE and now sheltered beneath a modern roof, its people long gone before the great eruption struck.
Akrotiri was a major Cycladic Bronze Age town buried under thick volcanic ash by the great Theran eruption around 1600 BCE, which preserved its buildings and artefacts in exceptional detail. Multi-storey buildings, some up to three storeys, survive along paved streets, together with a sophisticated drainage and sewage system built into the walls. Because the ash sealed and preserved it, the town is popularly nicknamed the 'Minoan Pompeii', a comparison to Roman Pompeii rather than a statement about its date.
No unburied human skeletons and almost no valuables have been found, suggesting the inhabitants evacuated in an orderly way, probably warned by earlier earthquakes; a single small gold ibex figurine, discovered in 1999, is the site's only gold object. The celebrated frescoes are now displayed in Fira and Athens rather than on site. Excavation began in 1967 under Spyridon Marinatos. A protective shelter that collapsed in 2005 was replaced by a bioclimatic roof in 2012.
Did you know? Unlike Roman Pompeii, Akrotiri has yielded no unburied skeletons and almost no valuables. Its people appear to have read the warning earthquakes and evacuated in good order before the eruption came.
