About Museum of Prehistoric Thera
Fira's modern museum gathers the finds from the Bronze Age town of Akrotiri, among them a near-perfect gold ibex figurine and frescoes like the Blue Monkeys and House of the Ladies.
The Museum of Prehistoric Thera stands in Fira, the capital of Santorini, beside the Ypapanti cathedral, in a modern building opened in 2000. It gathers the finds from the Bronze Age town of Akrotiri along with other Cycladic material, arranged in thematic sections covering the history of research on Thera, the island's geology, and the development of Cycladic culture up to the peak of Akrotiri in the 17th century BC.
Its best-known object is a small gold ibex figurine of the 17th century BC, found in 1999 inside a clay larnax beside a pile of animal horns. The museum displays Akrotiri wall paintings such as the House of the Ladies and the Blue Monkeys, though several of the most famous frescoes, including the Boxing Boys and the Spring Fresco, are held in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. Pottery, bronze vessels, plaster casts of furniture and Linear A finds complete the collection.
Did you know? The museum's showpiece is a small gold ibex from the 17th century BC. It was found in 1999, sealed inside a clay chest called a larnax, next to a pile of animal horns.
