About Oia
Santorini's northern village of blue-domed churches and whitewashed lanes, famous for its westward sunsets and, below the cliff, the fishing port of Amoudi Bay, reached by 300 steps.
Oia occupies the north-western tip of Santorini, extending for almost two kilometres along the northern edge of the caldera at a height of roughly 70 to 100 metres above sea level. Formerly known as Apano Meria, the 'upper side', it took the name Oia in the second half of the 19th century. In its shipping-era peak around 1890 it had some 2,500 residents and about 130 sailing ships, but the Amorgos earthquake of 9 July 1956 destroyed part of the town and emigration reduced the population to about 306 by 1977.
The 2021 census recorded about 838 inhabitants in the community. A ruined Venetian fortress, the Kasteli, crowns the western pinnacle, and a stepped path of roughly 300 steps descends to the small fishing port of Amoudi Bay. Oia is known for its whitewashed Cycladic houses, blue-domed churches, and westward views over the caldera at sunset.
Did you know? Oia has not always been Oia. Until the second half of the 19th century the village went by Apano Meria, meaning the 'upper side' of the island; the newer name stuck later.
How long should you spend at Oia?
Plan about ~90 min at Oia. That is enough to take it in and hear its narrated story; stay longer if it grabs you. The tour is self-guided, so there is no rush.
Is Oia worth visiting?
