About Burg Stahleck

A hilltop castle above Bacharach, blown up in 1689 and rebuilt across the 20th century. It now serves as a youth hostel, with wide terrace views over the Rhine.

Burg Stahleck is a hilltop castle standing roughly 160 metres above the Rhine on the left bank above Bacharach, Rhineland-Palatinate, within the UNESCO Upper Middle Rhine Valley. First documented around 1135, it was linked to the Archbishopric of Cologne and the counts palatine. During the Thirty Years' War it was besieged and changed hands repeatedly. In the War of the Palatine Succession, French troops blew it up on 15 March 1689, destroying the ring wall, keep and residential buildings, and it then lay in ruins for more than two centuries.

Stabilisation work began in 1909, and the castle was rebuilt in stages as a youth hostel: the first building was completed in 1925-26, the Palas in 1934-35, and the keep reconstructed in 1966-67. It has a water-filled moat, roughly 18 by 13 metres, described as a rarity among German castles. Today it operates as a Deutsche Jugendherberge with about 168 beds.

Did you know? Burg Stahleck is first documented around 1135, but French troops blew it up on 15 March 1689, and it then lay in ruins for more than two centuries before any rebuilding began.
