About Rheinfels Castle
Once reckoned the mightiest fortress on the Middle Rhine, this vast castle above Sankt Goar was blown up by French troops in 1797 and survives as a sprawling ruin.
Rheinfels Castle stands above Sankt Goar on the left bank of the Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate. It was founded in 1245 by Count Diether V of Katzenelnbogen and expanded over the following centuries into what is commonly described as the largest fortress on the Middle Rhine between Koblenz and Mainz. At its greatest extent it covered roughly five times the area of the surviving ruin, housing about 300 to 600 people in peacetime and up to some 4,500 during a siege. The clock and gate tower dates from around 1300.
French Revolutionary troops slighted the fortress in 1797, and it survives today as a large ruin rather than intact medieval fabric. A museum occupies the former chapel, while surviving outer buildings have been converted into a hotel, a wellness centre and a restaurant. In 2019 and 2020 Georg Friedrich, Prince of Prussia, claimed the castle should return to the Hohenzollern family; a court dismissed the claim in June 2019, and an out-of-court settlement was reached in January 2020.
Did you know? At full stretch the fortress could shelter around 4,500 people during a siege, though only some 300 to 600 lived here in peacetime. Today's ruin covers about a fifth of that original footprint.
