About Oberwesel

A Rhine wine town known as the 'town of towers' for its well-preserved medieval wall. Its Gothic Liebfrauenkirche, the 'red church', anchors the riverside below the Schönburg castle.

Oberwesel is a wine town on the left bank of the Middle Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate, within the UNESCO Upper Middle Rhine Valley. It keeps one of the best-preserved medieval town walls in the Rhine Gorge, begun in the early 13th century and extended into the mid-14th, once running roughly 3 kilometres around the town. Because so many of its towers survive, about 16 of an original 21 by the commonly cited figure, the town is popularly called the 'Stadt der Türme', the town of towers.

The town's landmark is the Liebfrauenkirche, begun in 1308, its choir consecrated in 1331 and the building finished after 1351. This Gothic basilica is nicknamed the 'red church' for its red exterior. The parish church of St. Martin, the 'white church', stands at the high northern end of town, while the Schönburg castle rises above and now houses a hotel and youth hostel.

Did you know? Oberwesel is nicknamed the 'Stadt der Türme', or town of towers: by the commonly cited figure about 16 of an original 21 towers survive, though the German account lists closer to 20 tower structures.
