About Burg Rheinstein
A castle on a rocky spur above the Rhine near Trechtingshausen. What you see is largely an 1820s Romantic reconstruction of a medieval ruin, now a museum with a cafe.
Burg Rheinstein stands on a rocky spur above the left bank of the Rhine near Trechtingshausen, Rhineland-Palatinate, within the UNESCO Upper Middle Rhine Valley, inscribed in 2002. The original medieval castle dates to around 1316 or 1317 and was already in decline by 1344. Its story changed in 1823, when Prince Frederick of Prussia bought the ruin and had it rebuilt, roughly between 1825 and 1829, begun under the architect Johann Claudius von Lassaulx and completed by his pupil Wilhelm Kuhn.
The result was one of the earliest 19th-century Rhine-Romantic reconstructions, and it helped set the fashion for restoring castles along the river. Rheinstein became a summer residence for the Prussian royal family, its interiors furnished in Romantic historicist taste with collections of stained glass and armour. Since 1975 it has been privately owned by the Hecher family and now operates as a museum with a cafe and shop.
