About Pfalzgrafenstein Castle
A ship-shaped toll castle marooned on a small Rhine island near Kaub, built to squeeze river tolls from every passing boat and, by long repute, never once destroyed.
Pfalzgrafenstein stands on the Falkenau island in the Rhine near Kaub, in Rhineland-Palatinate. Its pentagonal central tower was raised in 1326 and 1327 under King Ludwig IV, rising about 36 metres over six storeys, and around 1340 a six-sided turreted curtain wall some 12 metres high was built around it. A gun bastion and arcades followed in 1607 under Elector Friedrich IV, and a Baroque cap was added in 1714. The castle served as a Zollburg, or toll station, collecting dues from Rhine traffic and enforcing payment by raising chain booms across the river.
It withstood a 39-day siege in 1504 during the War of the Succession of Landshut. Toll collection ended in 1867, and in 1946 the castle passed to the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. It is now a public museum furnished in 17th to 19th century style, reached by ferry from Kaub. Its low, tapering silhouette on the island gave rise to its enduring image as a stone ship on the Rhine.
Did you know? The tower could not simply be ignored. When a boat refused the toll, the garrison stretched chain booms across the Rhine, turning the whole river into a closed gate until the captain paid up.
