About Drosselgasse, Rüdesheim am Rhein
A narrow cobbled lane in Rüdesheim's old town, packed with wine taverns, live music and souvenir shops. Honestly touristy, and cheerfully so, in the heart of Rheingau wine country.
The Drosselgasse is a narrow cobblestone lane in the old town of Rüdesheim am Rhein, a Rheingau wine town on the right bank of the river at the southern edge of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The lane runs roughly 144 metres and is only about two metres wide, one of six passages linking the main street to the Rhine promenade. It was first documented in the 15th century as a quarter of Rhine boatmen, and wine taverns became established there over the 18th and 19th centuries.
Most of the lane's buildings were destroyed in an air raid on 25 November 1944 and rebuilt in the 1950s. Today it is lined with wine taverns, some half-timbered, offering live music alongside gift and souvenir shops. Rüdesheim itself is a major tourism destination whose Riesling vineyards are documented from 1399, and the Niederwald monument above the town is reached by cable car.
Did you know? The Drosselgasse measures only about 144 metres long and roughly two metres wide, making it one of six narrow lanes that connect Rüdesheim's main street, the Oberstraße, down to the Rhine promenade.
