About Ehrenbreitstein Fortress
A vast fortress on a plateau above Koblenz, an early-19th-century Prussian rebuild reached by cable car across the Rhine, and the northernmost point of the Rhine Gorge World Heritage Site.
Ehrenbreitstein Fortress stands on the right bank of the Rhine at Koblenz, on a plateau about 118 metres above the river. It is the northernmost point of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. An earlier castle is thought to have stood here from around the year 1000 and is first documented in 1139, with the palace of Philippsburg added at its foot between 1625 and 1629. That earlier fortress capitulated to French forces during the War of the Second Coalition and was blown up by the French in 1801.
The present fortress is a Prussian rebuild, constructed between 1817 and 1828 and ready for service by 1834, so it is not medieval fabric. It could accommodate up to about 1,200 soldiers and was never attacked while in active service. Restored between 2007 and 2011, it hosted part of the Bundesgartenschau in 2011 and now houses museums, including the Landesmuseum Koblenz, a youth hostel with 157 beds, restaurants and cultural venues.
Did you know? For all its scale, the fortress never saw a shot fired at it in anger. Built to hold up to about 1,200 soldiers, it was never attacked during its active service as a Prussian stronghold.
