About Deutsches Eck, Koblenz
The headland where the Moselle meets the Rhine in Koblenz, crowned by a giant equestrian monument to Kaiser Wilhelm I whose present statue is a 1993 replica of the 1897 original.
The Deutsches Eck, or German Corner, is a headland in Koblenz where the Moselle flows into the Rhine. It takes its name from a commandry of the Teutonic Order established here in 1216 by the Archbishop of Trier, whose premises centred on the Deutschherrenhaus, built from 1279 onwards. An equestrian monument to Kaiser Wilhelm I was inaugurated on 31 August 1897. It stands over 37 metres tall, with a mounted statue about 14 metres high, and bears an inscription declaring that the empire will never be destroyed while its people remain united and loyal.
The original statue was damaged by American artillery late in the Second World War and then dismantled. Afterwards the site became a monument to German unity, displaying the German states' coats of arms, with Berlin Wall segments later placed nearby. The present statue is a bronze replica by Raymond Kittl, installed and inaugurated in September 1993, funded by the private donors Werner and Anneliese Theisen. The headland is a freely accessible public park with a viewing platform.
Did you know? The corner was German long before the empire. Its name goes back to a commandry of the Teutonic Order, the Deutscher Orden, set up on the headland in 1216 by the Archbishop of Trier.
