About Basilica of San Vitale
The Basilica of San Vitale, an eight-sided church of the sixth century in Ravenna, whose apse glows with Byzantine mosaics of the emperor Justinian and the empress Theodora.
Begun in the 520s or early 530s and consecrated by Bishop Maximian in about 547, San Vitale was paid for by the banker Julianus Argentarius. In the sanctuary, two famous mosaic panels show Justinian and Theodora, each with their court, bringing gifts to the church. Neither of them ever came to Ravenna. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ravenna's early Christian monuments.
San Vitale is visited with a combined ticket for the diocesan monuments, best bought online. Shoulders and knees must be covered, and flash is not allowed. Hours are shorter from early November.
