About Archiepiscopal Chapel and Museum
The Archiepiscopal Chapel of Sant'Andrea in Ravenna, the private chapel of the bishops built around 500, with mosaics of Christ as a warrior, and the museum with the ivory throne of Maximian.
The chapel was built for the Catholic bishops under Bishop Peter II, while the Arian king Theodoric ruled. Over its door Christ appears as a young soldier, trampling a lion and a serpent. The museum around it holds the ivory throne of Archbishop Maximian, carved in the sixth century, and treasures from the old cathedral.
The chapel and museum are part of the five-monument diocesan ticket only, with a booked time; visits last about 25 minutes. Hours are shorter from early November.
