About National Museum of Ravenna

The National Museum of Ravenna, in the old Benedictine monastery beside San Vitale, with Roman and early Christian stones, ivories, icons and medieval frescoes around two cloisters.

The collection began in the eighteenth century with the antiquities gathered by learned monks, and it has filled the monastery of San Vitale since 1913. Its two cloisters are lined with Roman inscriptions and early Christian sarcophagi; upstairs are ivories, nearly two hundred icons and a fourteenth-century fresco cycle by Pietro da Rimini.

The museum is closed on Mondays and keeps short hours on other days. It is not part of the diocesan ticket; a separate combined ticket covers it with the Mausoleum of Theodoric and Sant'Apollinare in Classe.
