About Mausoleum of Galla Placidia

The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia in Ravenna, a small cross-shaped building of the fifth century whose dome is covered with a starry sky of gold on deep blue mosaic.

The chapel was built around 430, in the time of Galla Placidia, daughter of an emperor and ruler of the Western Empire for her young son. It is called her mausoleum, but she died in Rome in 450 and was almost certainly buried there. Inside, light filters through thin alabaster windows onto mosaics of stars, deer and the Good Shepherd.

Entry needs a combined ticket with a booked time. The building is small, so visits are short when it is crowded. Hours are shorter from early November.

Did you know? The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia is named after her, but she died in Rome in 450 and was almost certainly buried there, not in Ravenna.
