About Neonian Baptistery
The Neonian Baptistery in Ravenna, an eight-sided brick building of the fifth century beside the cathedral, whose dome shows the baptism of Christ among the twelve apostles in mosaic.
The baptistery was built in the early fifth century and decorated by Bishop Neon around the middle of that century, which gives it its name; it is also called the Baptistery of the Orthodox. In the dome, John the Baptist baptises Christ in the river Jordan, shown as an old river god, and the apostles walk in a circle around them.
Entry needs a combined ticket for the diocesan monuments, with a booked time; visits last only a few minutes. Hours are shorter from early November.
