About Piazza del Popolo
Piazza del Popolo, the main square of Ravenna, with two tall columns of 1483 from the time of Venetian rule, an arcaded Venetian palace and the battlemented town hall, closed to traffic since 1969.
The square was laid out in the thirteenth century in front of the palace of the Da Polenta family, lords of Ravenna. Under Venice, from 1441 to 1509, it took its present shape, and two granite columns were raised in 1483, as in Venice. Today they carry statues of the city's patron saints, Apollinaris and Vitalis.
The square is free and open at all times. The town hall is a working building and is not normally open to visitors. Cafés with outdoor tables line the square.
Did you know? The two granite columns of Piazza del Popolo in Ravenna were raised in 1483, under Venetian rule, on bases carved by Pietro Lombardo.
