About Mausoleum of Theodoric
The Mausoleum of Theodoric in Ravenna, the stone tomb of the Ostrogothic king built around 520, roofed with a single block of limestone about ten metres wide and weighing hundreds of tonnes.
Unlike the brick churches of the city, the tomb is built of large blocks of stone. Its roof is one huge dome-shaped stone, perhaps 230 to 300 tonnes, with twelve carved handles used to lift it. Theodoric died in 526; a porphyry basin in the upper room is by tradition his coffin, but his remains were removed in Byzantine times.
This is a state site with its own ticket; hours change by day and are often shorter on weekdays, so check before you go. An outside stair leads to the upper room.
