About Kujundžiluk (the Old Bazaar)
The cobbled Ottoman bazaar beside the Old Bridge, once the street of the goldsmiths and metalworkers, now lined with shops of hand-hammered copperware, kilims and souvenirs.
Kujundžiluk is the old cobbled bazaar street of Mostar, running from the Old Bridge along the left bank through the heart of the historic çarşija, the Ottoman crafts and trade quarter. Its name comes from the kujundžije, the goldsmiths and metalworkers whose workshops once clustered by the bridge; the first is recorded in 1631, and the street is thought to date to the mid-16th century. Its small stone shops with wooden shutters survive along a lane paved in round river stones, part of the area UNESCO inscribed in 2005.
Today the bazaar is famous above all for hand-beaten copper and brass: engraved trays, coffee sets and little models of the Old Bridge, sold alongside kilims, jewellery, paintings and souvenirs. Like the rest of the old town it was damaged in the 1990s war and then restored, in a five-year programme led by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and the World Monuments Fund that ran alongside the rebuilding of the bridge. Steps away are the Tepa market and the courtyard of the Koski Mehmed-paša Mosque.
