About Franciscan Church and Peace Bell Tower

Mostar's Catholic Franciscan church, destroyed in 1992 and rebuilt after the war, beside a soaring 107-metre concrete bell tower known as the Peace Bell Tower, the tallest in the country.

The Franciscan Church of Saints Peter and Paul, with its monastery, stands by the Radobolja stream at the foot of Hum hill, the Catholic church of Mostar. The first church here was begun in 1866, after the Ottoman sultan granted land for it; the monastery followed in the 1890s. On the night of 9 to 10 May 1992, early in the war, the church was shelled and burned; English-language and Croatian sources name the Yugoslav People's Army as the force shelling Mostar at the time.

After the war the friars cleared the ruins and built a new church beside the surviving monastery, finished around 2000, to a modern design. Beside it rose a wholly new bell tower of reinforced concrete, 107 metres tall to the tip of its cross, the tallest bell tower in Bosnia and Herzegovina, deliberately named the Peace Bell Tower. A viewing level at 75 metres, reached by lift and stairs, looks out over the whole city. The height of the new tower has been the subject of public debate.
