About Muslibegović House
One of the largest and finest Ottoman-era residences in Herzegovina, an 18th-century bey's house in Mostar with carved wooden ceilings, still family-owned and run as a museum and hotel.
The Muslibegović House is one of the largest and most monumental examples of Ottoman-period residential architecture in Herzegovina, in the Brankovac quarter near the old town of Mostar. It dates from the second half of the 18th century and was extended in 1871 to 1872 under a surviving building permit. Built for the wealthy Muslibegović family, who had settled in Mostar in the late 17th century, it is a national monument, kept in family ownership throughout its history.
The house follows the sheltered central-hall plan, allowing many rooms side by side, and is famous for its carved wooden ceilings, said to have taken two years to make. Among its protected treasures are a manuscript Qur'an, calligraphic panels and an old sabre; the household's textiles survived the war because they had been stored abroad. Damaged in the 1990s war and carefully restored, it is run by the family as a museum of a Herzegovinian bey's home and as a small heritage hotel.
