About Sahat Kula (the Clock Tower)
A square Ottoman clock tower above the old town, raised before 1636 as a pious endowment, its clock long facing the town centre so the whole bazaar could keep the time.
The Sahat Kula, or Clock Tower, stands on the left bank above the Old Bridge area, in the old Brankovac quarter on a stepped lane. A square stone tower about sixteen metres high with a pyramidal roof, it is a national monument. No one knows exactly when or by whom it was built; tradition makes it the endowment of a Mostar benefactor, Fatima kaduna Šarić, and the oldest written mention is a deed of 1636, so it stood before then.
Clock towers like this, sahat-kule, were raised beside mosques across Ottoman Bosnia as pious endowments; about twenty-one were built under Ottoman rule. Mostar's faced its clock west so it could be read from the town centre. Its bell was taken for the war effort in 1917 and the clock later fell silent for decades; the tower was restored from 1981 with a new clock. Seriously damaged in 1993, it was repaired in 1998 and 1999, with a new lead roof and rebuilt corner turret keeping two original stone ornaments.
Did you know? No record survives of exactly when the tower was built; tradition credits a Mostar benefactor named Fatima kaduna Šarić, and the oldest mention of it is a deed of 1636.
