About Koski Mehmed-paša Mosque

A graceful early-17th-century domed mosque by the Neretva, whose slender minaret can be climbed for the classic high view down onto the Old Bridge and the old town.

The Koski Mehmed-paša Mosque stands on the left bank of the Neretva, a short way upstream of the Old Bridge, between the river, the bazaar and the Tepa market. Built in the early 17th century, about 1618, it was founded by Koski Mehmed-paša, a Mostar-born Ottoman official; his brother Mahmud completed it after his death. It is a classic single-domed Ottoman mosque with a three-domed entrance porch and a tall attached stone minaret, one of only three domed mosques in Mostar.

Inside, the dome is painted with trees, roses and carnations, documented and restored on fresh plaster in natural colours. The walled courtyard holds a stone ablution fountain under an 18th-century pavilion and a small tomb. The mosque's great draw for visitors is its fourteen-sided minaret, nearly thirty metres high: a narrow spiral stair of about eighty steps climbs to the balcony, which gives the famous postcard view straight down the river to the Old Bridge. It was badly damaged in the 1990s war and restored afterwards.

Did you know? The mosque is one of only three in Mostar with a dome rather than a timber roof; it was founded about 1618 by the Mostar-born official Koski Mehmed-paša and finished by his brother.
